The Week Before Halloween on Cape Ann

Hammond Castle is doing its last two weekends. The clam shacks are counting down. Here's what the week of October 19 actually looks like out here.

Stone gothic arches frame the Atlantic at Hammond Castle

We're in that specific stretch of October where the leaves have already turned and started to let go, the light goes amber by four, and you need a real jacket after sunset. Halloween is Saturday, October 31, 2026. That's twelve days out. If you're staying with us this week, or thinking about a late-fall trip, here's what's actually happening.

Hammond Castle's final stretch

Hammond Castle Museum closes for the season on November 16, which means you have about four weekends left, and the two before Halloween are the ones people drive in for. The stone courtyard, the great hall, the organ, all of it hits differently in late October when the Atlantic is slate-gray through those gothic arches. If you've never been, this is the week to go. Buy tickets ahead. The parking lot is small and the castle is not.

If you have kids with you, the castle genuinely delivers on the Halloween atmosphere without trying to be a haunted house. It's just an eccentric inventor's medieval fantasy on a cliff, which turns out to be plenty.

The clam shacks are counting down

The Clam Box of Ipswich stays open through the Sunday after Thanksgiving, so you've got time, but the lines are gone now and the clams are still great. The Lobster Pool up at Folly Cove runs through November and is one of the best sunset seats on Cape Ann in any season. Bring a sweater. Woodman's in Essex is year-round, so no urgency there, but a bowl of chowder and a plate of fried clams on a cold October afternoon is one of the quieter pleasures of living out here.

If you want to eat inside with a view, Minglewood Harborside on Rogers Street has the harbor and reliable hours this time of year. The Gloucester House is also open and feels appropriately old-school for a fall night.

A walk that fits this week

Halibut Point in Rockport is the move. The quarry reflects the sky, the ocean side opens up to Maine on a clear day, and the whole loop is manageable in under an hour. Mid-week afternoons you might have long stretches to yourself. Wear something warm. The wind off the water in late October is not messing around.

If you want something shorter and closer to town, the Gloucester HarborWalk is doing exactly what it was built for right now. Low sun, working boats coming in, the Man at the Wheel looking appropriately dramatic against the sky. It's free, it's always open, and it's a good forty-five minutes before dinner.

Dogtown is also beautiful this week, but the trails hold water after rain and the markers can be confusing in low light. Go in the morning if you go, and don't start a loop after 3pm.

Where to warm up

Pleasant Street Tea Co. and Lone Gull Coffeehouse are both doing what you want a coffee shop to do in October: warm, quiet enough to read in, honest hours. Brothers' Brew in Rockport if you're over that way. Virgilio's for a St. Joseph sandwich to take to the beach. (Yes, the beach, in October. Trust us. Wingaersheek at low tide with no one else there is a specific kind of good.)

For an afternoon treat, Tuck's Candy on Bearskin Neck is still open and still making saltwater taffy you can watch get pulled. Nichols Candies out in West Gloucester does chocolate turkeys this time of year that are worth the drive.

Shows and sounds

Shalin Liu Performance Center has programming running right through fall. Check the Rockport Music calendar for this week specifically. The hall is one of the best rooms on the North Shore no matter who's playing, and a show there followed by dinner on Bearskin Neck is a pretty complete Saturday night.

The Rhumb Line in Gloucester is doing live music most nights of the week. Check their schedule before you go. The Cut has shows on the books too if you want something louder.

A note on Halloween weekend

If you're arriving Friday the 30th or Saturday the 31st, know that Rockport and Gloucester both do neighborhood trick-or-treating in the early evening, and some streets get busy with families. It's charming, not chaotic. Restaurant reservations are still a good idea on Saturday night. Tonno, Franklin, and Short and Main all take reservations and all book up on weekends even in the shoulder season.

That's the week. Cold mornings, warm afternoons if the sun holds, and the particular quiet of a coastal town that has mostly gone back to itself. Email us if you want specific picks for the day you're here.
